Non-Insured Health Benefits Program

The Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Program of the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) of Health Canada provides a range of medically necessary goods and services to eligible First Nations (including registered Indians under the terms of The Indian Act) and recognized Inuit clients in Canada. These goods and services, which include prescription medications, supplement benefits provided through other private, federal, provincial and territorial healthcare programs.

Prescription Drug Benefits, Exception Drug Requests
The Program publishes a Drug Benefit List of the drugs that have been approved for coverage by the NIHB Program. The listed drugs are those primarily used in a home or ambulatory setting. Appendix A lists Limited Use Benefits and Criteria. Appendix B is the Special Formulary for Chronic Renal Failure Patients.

Drugs that are not listed in the Drug Benefit List may be approved in special circumstances upon receipt of a completed "Exception Drugs Request Form" from the attending physician or dentist.
